MUTINY WINS THE STEEPLES

Clerk of Totalisator: Mr. C. A. li. Price. Timekeeper: Mr. S. E. Cooper. The first day's racing in connection with the Napier Park Club's Winter Meeting is not favoured with the best of weather. In this respect, all the club's fixtures seem to strike the rainy season. To-day it is cold and miserable, and ruin is threatening. In consequence, the attendance is not as large as it would otherwise be, although Hastings contributes a contingent of over 800 spectators. The course is in good condition, and the arrangements perfect. The City 1 land are discoursing sweet music. The Trial Hurdles brought out a field of nine, Mr Quinlivim's gelding getting homo after a big finish. Seven horses saddled up for the Electric, and a splendid race resulted in Moonraker catching tlio judge's eye after a brilliant run with Heavenly Twin. The Steeplechase was full of interest, and it was quite a treat to see the wondcri'ul recovery made by Jockey Sweeney on Morag. He received quite an ovation oil returning to the scale. Mutiny ran a grand race; but Tirltea sadly disappointed his backers. An accident also happened in the Hunters' Steeplechase, Arthur liyde coming to grief oil Glengarry a short distance from home. This was a good race, and a splendid finish resulted in Rangipunehu getting home by a length. Scrap Iron fell. Qneeiisborough was last. I'mslopogaas and Rangipunehu went to the front at the start and cut out the running. Billy came with a rush at the finish, but failed to overhaul the leader. Time, ;hnin :-!sec. Going down the back stretch Moonraker was lying last. Rounding into the straight Daring made a forward move. Heavenly Twin led to within fifty yards of the post, when Moonraker came with a great rush and won by a head. Time, 1 min 23sec. Totalisator, £382 ; £127 on winner. Dividend, £'2 lis. Napier Steeplechase, of 170 sovs; second horse to receive 20 sovs from the stakes. About o miles. W. Douglas's ch g Mutiny, aged, 12st 3lb ... 1 G. E. G. Richardson's b g Morag, aged, lOst 71b... ... ... 2 W. Williams's b g Timothv, aged, lOstGlb ... 8 Tiritea, The Plug, and Gondolier also started. Timothy cut out the running and was a quarter of a mile ahead the first round. Gondolier refused the sod wall the first time round. The Plug fell at the rails. Rounding into the straight Tiritea was last. Mutiny started to overhaul the leaders the last time round. Timothy gave place to Morag. The latter going on had a hundred yards lead, and fell at the sod wall rounding into the straight. lie was quickly remounted and came a good second. Sweeney made a splendid recoverv on Richardson's gelding, remounting in wonderfully fast time, and he was loudly cheered when finishing. Tiritea was last. Totalisator, £.512: £lls on winner; dividend, £1 -Is.
Hcxteks' Steeplechase, of 50 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes; gentlemen riders. For qualified hunters that have never won a. HunUe Race or Steeplechase exceeding 40 sovs in value at time of starting. '2l miles. W. Carr's c m Hilda 11, syrs, 12st 1 H. H. Jackson's br g Eepo, aged, 12st 71b 2 Glengarry also started. This was a good race. Glengarry and Hilda 11. fought out the finish, when the former fell five yards from the post, bringing Hyde off. He received a slight shaking, but nothing serious. Totalisator, £1305 ; £BB on winner ; dividend, £3 2s. Time, 6min 2sec. Stewards" Stakes Handicap, of 150 sovs; second liovse to receive 20 sovs from the stakes. The winner of any Handicap of the value of 100 sovs after the declaration of weights to carry 71b penalty. 1J mile. G. "Wright's b g Panoply, syrs, Bst 31b * 1 Hon. J. D. Ormond's b m Martyrdom, 4vrs, 7st 21b ... ... 2 R. Connop's eh £r Lotion, 4yrs, Bst 131b .* ... 3 Searchlight and Acone did not start. From a splendid start the field passed the stand in a bunch. Rounding the back Martxrdom was leading tho field, Leontini last. A great race up the straight was won by a nose, Lotion a good third, Leontini and The Artist last. Div., £3 7s.
