THAI XING ITEMS

A number of touts were in evidence tins morning, but as nothing sensational was performed they were somewhat disappointed. The course was in good order, and a large number of horses were in attendance. Tally-ho went a strong half-mile. New Forest an<l Lotion wore associated in a round at three-quarter pace, both going well. Rangipunehu went three rounds over the schooling fences, they getting the worst of it, for he struck one or two very heavily. Searchlight, doing half-pace, was taken twice round. Lorenzo was restricted to slow worK. Marino, Heavenly Twin, and \\ ikitoria went together over a fast mile, the son of Nelson holding his companions .safe. Allan-a-Palo and Primula went once round at top, both being together at the finish. Aphony, Mutiny, Bessie McCarthy, C'ulloden, and Bonnie Scotland did slow work. Glengarry went twice round at a steady pace. Aio went a circuit at top, the daughter of Torpedo going in good style. Gondolier was on the track, but got no further than walking exercise. The big chestnut appears to bo very lame.

GENERAL ITEMS. T. Clarke has charge of Chain-shot on his homewurd voyage. It is probable that a race meeting will be held at the llutt nextmonth. Su'ephon. the jumper, is again taken in hand. The son of Papapa has seen his best. Hickev rode llom-.-o in a hurdle race at tile Sandown Park meeting, England. Jockey Hughes obtained judgment acrainst Fergus for £*ll 15s Gd lor riding fees. Sternc-haser has given over his maneating propensities and is now quite docile. St. Frusquin is the first of the proifenv of St. Simon to win the Two Thousand Guineas. Johnny Faa lias been sold for L'GO. I think the son of Trefoil and La Bohemienne has seen his In st days. Royal Rose and Response ran a dead-heat for third place at Sydney on April IS. Dan O'Brien's luck again ! Sir Modred's stock won £ll, ">OO last season in America. He was third on the winning sires list, and is nineteen years old. The hurdle-racer, The Ace, has been shipped to Sydney from Wellington, having been purchased by two young tourists.

Young Cheviot is to be raced again during the season. This horse ran very consistantly three seasons ago, and at Crackshot's Timaru Cup meeting won three races. The Auckland crack, Fabulist, is to be tried over hurdles. It is pity the owner of the son of Fabulous does not preserve this brilliant colt a year or two longer. It is is reported that the loc-ally-owned Mousquetairi, Pounamun, 11 le Possible and Sternehaser are under orders for England. A lad received 11 days' "quad' for stealing a shilling on the Nelson racecourse. If he had stolen 4*l he might have been let oil' with a week. The locally-owned New Forest is fancied in some quarters for the Birthday Handicap at Dunedin. It is doubtful if the son of Newuiinister and Forest Queen will go south. The Great Northern Steeplechase and National Hurdle Race show an increase of eleven and thirteen nominations respectively this year as compared with last year. A West Coast paper announces that « Cnllodenis in steady work at Napier." Persons not acquainted with this district fancy that all the training is done at Napier, and Hastings is seldom heard of. If the result of a race run at Hastings is wired to other parts of the colony, it is under the heading of Napier, and Hastings is seldom or never mentioned in racing matters. At the sale of Mr P. Butler's horses at Christchurch, the following prices were realised :—Liberator, 150gs ; Au Revoir, 50gs; Medicus, ;-}(>gs; Salvo, 42Ags; Padlock, 25gs; Cannon Ball, 30gs; Venom, 17gs. Liberator has been repurchased for Mr Butler. His only other charger is No Wonder. The Grand National winner, Kulnine, is again in work. Wakawatea's foal brother has been named Dobbin. Vagrant won a welter at the Maribvrr.ong races on April IG. "The Gisborne horse, Hopgarden, is given as a good thing for the Grand National Hurdles at Ellerslie next month. " Phaeton," in the New Zealand Herald, considers that Fabulist is entitled to a spell, instead of being trained for the big Hurdle Race. N< \vs from Wanganui states that another effort will be made to train Fraternite. The son of The Dauphin will be tried over hurdles.
