Serious Accident at Taradale.
Fijum Our Own Cohi:esi>o-\t>kmt.]
A nasty accident happened near Taradale last night. Mr Paget, cab owner, was driving Messrs Wilson and Mortenson to Napier, when the vehicle came in violent collision with a cart coming in the opposite direction. The driver sustained serious injuries, whilst the otlier gentlemen escaped almost miraculously, as the horse, taking fright, and under no control, dashed along the road. Mr Mortenson ultimately succeeded in securing the reins, and, with admirable coolness, brought the runaway to a standstill. Dr do Lisle attended the sufferer, who is at present lying in the hospital.
It is stated neither vehicles had lights. The authorities will now perhaps exert themselves and vigorously enforce the by-law regarding vehicles carrying lights after sundown. It is surprising that accidents of this nature are not of more frequent occurrence around Napier. Nearly every night accidents which might result quite as seriously as the above, if not fatally, are only averted by the timely pulling up of the horses, sometimes within a foot of each other. Perhaps the authorities will be content with the mischief already done and insist on the by-law being carried into effect.
