A fire broke out in a workshop at the rear of S. H. Russell's, High street, spreading with great rapidity. It destroyed Russell's workshops, warehouse and dwelling, Salvation Army Barrieks, Dr. McCarthy's residence, Post and Telegraph Offices and Courthouse, where the fire brigade and townspeople prevented the Haines crossing the road.
