What drives France to such bootless, senseless undertakings abroad is simply (disappointment, humiliation, utter disgust with matters as they are at home. It is but the instinct of the mauvais coucheur, who after tossing and turning in his bed for the whole night long, must in the end start up and go forth with his gun in the morning and kill something, lest in his frenzy he should kill himself.
A Timaru clergyman in the course of a sermon recently preached said: “ Dearly beloved ” (and so forth) “ it would be a good thing.for us if we all could oftener forget all mankind in the aggregate, and think more of the individual units that are close io us. Never mind about all mankind being embraced in your scheme of love, dear brult.er, but what about the servant-girl in the kitchen ?” A new republic, called the Republic of Counani, between Brazil and French Guinea, has been declared.
