The Education Question.
An Auckland paper says tikis in reference to the Education question:— We think the training of say 23 young men aud women at the cost of £2OOO during the past year, has been straining things just a little too far. An average of £B7 a head per annum for fitting teachers to earn a livelihood for themselves is—not to put too fine a point upon it—a great deal, and though members of the Board and of the Institute are prepared «oio to accept a much humbler subvention, thatdoes not alter the glaring scandal that has been existing. But then again. Ara all teachers subjected to this training process ? Not at all. It is a case of many being called—to be teachers—but few are chosen—to be tralined. The fact of the matter is the operation of selection has been an illustration of the most glaring favouritism, and it .would be an interesting thing to know on what grounds the selection of young teachers has been usually based, We know, on the authority of one of the ablest members of the Board of Education, that pretty faces have ruled the Board frequently in the appointment of teachers to lucrative positions in schools, and we may fairly conclude that among the various reasons for selection to the favoured position of being trained at a cost of £B7 a year, pretty faces and figure, and good looks generally, played no unimportant part.
