AMATEUR ATHLETIC SPORTS

Tax annual sports of the Bast Coast Amateur Athletic Club took place on Saturday afternoon, in Captain Tucker's paddock. The weather was splendid, and the attendance fair | the course rough, but in as good order as might be expected on such ground. Messrs P. T. Morgan and T. Morgan acted as judges ; Captain Winter, starter i Mr Primrose, handiflapper i and Messrs Croft and Bourn assisted, while Mr A. Bees was indefatigable as secretary. Ths first event wSs— Tax Maisxx Raci, Sage 1 DunlOp .. .. ..2 ■Barnard ■. .. ■ > ~ 8 Bogers also ran. Sage won a rather slow race by a yard. Ham Mm Handicap. L. Bees (20yde) 1 Bago (70yds) 2 F. Lysnar (45yds) 3 Sage kept his start for the first round, Rees running strongly. Half way round again on the homo stretch Bees caught Sage and had it hie own way. Lysnar finished well for third place. E. Brown (scr) also ran. Time, 2min 15sec. Max Walk. G. Johnstone (10yds) ~ .. 1 E. Evans (ear) 2 Bogers (40yds) also started. This was a Splendid fate between first and second. For the first two rounds the competitors named kept theit distances, Evans occasionally making spurts, but dropping back again. On the [ast rotind Evans caught Johnstone, and they walked together tor some distance. Johnstone, however, " pegged ” away strongly, being in better form than Evans, who dropped away at the corner, 150yds from the post. Another spurt lessened the difference, but was unavailing. Both competitors were cheered on coming in. Bogers walked in fancy style, but seemed to find the pace a little too warm. Time, Bmin Msec.

Quabixx-Mob Handicap. L. Bees (Syds) .; .. .. 1 A. Bees (25yds) 2 Booth (10yds) .. .. .. 3 There were no other starters. L. Bees caught Booth before he had got half way, and a capital race ensued between the two brothers, A. Bees being beaten by a yard. Time, 56sec, High Jump. F leet (tit lOin) ..1 Booth and Dunlop also contested, the winner leaping in fine style. Max Handicap. B. Brown (eer) 1 F. Lysnar (85yds) .. .. 2 O. Johnston (70yds) .. .. 3 Barnes (90yds) and Sage (90yds) also Started On the quarter round Barnes led with Lysnar second and Sage dropped out of it. Barnes followed suit on the second round, Brown gaining steadily. On the third ronnd> the latter led, Johnston being last, and they finished in this order. Lysnar made a strong efi tto catch the leader, but in any case the spurt was made two late. Time, smin. 16 l-Sth sec.

« 150yds Handicap. L. Bees (ser) 1 F. Teat (7yds) 2 A. Booth (Syds) 8 Bogers (16yds) also started. A good start Was made, Rees getting away Very smartly. Teat eaught Booth about half-way, and Rees shot up when near the tape, beating by a breast; the others being well up. Time 15 l-sth sec.

Antrcmsns Handicap—2ooyds. Parsons (Byds) 1 Simeon (ser) .. .. ~ 2 atlmana (4yds) ~ ~ .. 3 Weldish (4yds) also started. This was the bast race of the afternoon. The men wer e very troublesome to the starter, and Parsons received a yard penalty. There was eventually a good start, Parsons appearing to have tna advantage. At one hundred yards the Maori jostled Wildish, causing both to lore ground. Parsons got in front, and thsre Wta a splendid finish, only those in a direct line with the tape being able to distinguish ths winner. The Maori, too, was only a breast behind, and Wildish was a good fourth. Time 28 see.

SnnuaßAsx Hawisap, 1 mile. A. Bees (100yds) .. .. 1 A. Booth (40yds) ~ ~ .. 9 F. Lysnar (100yds) ~ ~ 8 Brown (ser) also ran. The course was a eery stiff one, including four hedge iumpsi a ditch, and hurdles. Hees got the first jump, and cleared it very nicely, gradually increasing his lead. Brown seemed out of condition, negotiated the jumps poorly, and did not gain on the handicap distance. The others toek the jumps well. At the last quartermile Baes had about thirty yards and Lysna 1 fifteen yards ahead of Booth. The latter’ taking the jumps clean, gained at every hurdle, and passed Lysnar at the last one. Boes won by about ten yards, Lysnar being five yards behind Booth. Tax Cur, For the winner Of most events, now becomes the possession of L. Bees for the ensuing year. It has to be won twice in succession before it is the property of the bolder. E. Brown hold it last year. One weak point in the sports was the email number of starters for each race in comparison with the entries. The arrangeBrents were very satisfactory, and punctuality in starting was strictly observed.
