Five of the seven arrested Moonlighters who were committed for trial on a charge of killing the Head Constable near Lisdownuvara, County Clare, during the daring raid made by a gang on the house of Sexton, a farmer, have been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. The raid was arranged by the informer, Callinan, in order to bring his companions into the hands ot the police.
The New York Tribune states an attempt has been made by the dynamiters to destroy the British fort at Halifax tailed, but the building and stores received slight injury. At the Unionist banquet at Westminster a resolution was passed expressing confidence in Lord Hartington as a leader of the Unionist party course, In reply, Lord Hartington said the Unionists were not ashamed to cooperate with Lord Salisbury, but that joining Mr Gladetone would mean the betrayal of England.
