Public Works’ Statement.

A correspondent to a contemporary tele* graphs the following forecast of the Statement which has been set down for to-day:—The Government will ask for a million loan, as indicated in the Financial Statement, and an extra loan of one million for the North Island trunk line. The principal works will be the Manawatu-Gorge line construction, for which £130,000 will be required, and the Otago central, for which £120,000 will be asked for carrying the line to Middlemaroh. Only £590 is now available on the Otago central the vote of Mr B dlanoe having been allocated to the unemployed dr hypothecated to otner works. It is proposed to carry the Riversdale-Switzers line to Mataura, so as to make it available for traffic. Votes for the Rotorua line and the Helensville line northwards will als > be provided for, but the amounts, which will not be large, are not yet fixed. A vote for the Auckland departmental buildings (Cast >m House) also appears. There is no intention of proposing an alteration in the route of the North IslMl trunk line, but in any event the works, which would take a couple of years to complete, can be commenced at either end of the li >e. A piincipal feature of the Statement will be a proposal to throw the whole cost of new works such as buildings, roads, bridges, etc., on the consolidated fund after a lapse of three years, and this will gradually wipf out part of the works estimates, which consist of those votes.
