A WISE DECISION.

The good sense of Councillors prevailed when they decided against Crs Tuohey and King in their endeavour to reduce the salary of the County Clerk and Engineer. If such a course had been adopted the Council would certainly have been a “ penny wise and pound foolish.’’ It would not be too much to say that throughout the whole of the colony no two gentlemen could be found to fill the positions with more credit than Captain Winter and Mr Warren. Personally we can speak as to the abilities of both gentlemen, and have no hesitation in corroborating the sentiments of Crs Wallace and Stubbs. Mr Warren has always proved an. efficient Clerk, he has a lot to do, and does it thoroughly. Our attention has often been drawn to the complete manner in which his accounts are kept, and he has spared no time in digesting the many local Acts under which the business of the Council is conducted. He is always ready to give advice to councillors on intricate points which often arise. His complete system of keeping the records of the proceedings is worthy of special mention. The minutes are of the fullest description, and the views of each Councillor are set forth in a concise and correct manner. As for Captain Winter, he earns every p nny which the Council pays him, and it is sufficient to say that his duties are faithfully performed, and must meet with the approval of those who employ him. The reason given for the proposed reduction was that the financial position of the Council did not warrant a continuance of the fixed salary. If the mover and seconder were to go into figures they would plainly see that the Council is in no worse a position than it has been for years past —rather in a better.
