MR CARROLL IN GISBORNE.

Mr Carroll arrived in Gisborne on Sunday, and is losing no time in enquiring as to the wants of his constituents. \ native gathering is to be held to-morrow, at which the natives will have a chance to ventilate their opinions on all matters affecting their interests. Wi Pere, we now learn definitely, has decided to follow up the protest which he lodged against Mr Carroll’s election. As the matter has gone so ■ ar, it is not for us to comment on it until a decision has been arrived at one vay or the other. No doubt Wi Pere s satisfied in his own mind as to the -ourse he is pursuing, but viewed in .he light in which it appears to us he as taken a course that is much to be regretted.

The fact of the petition, however, teed not prevent the holding of a good neeting, and bringing further weight to ■ear in the opposition aga.nA the present native laud laws.

□n November 16 the rate, ayeri of the Jounty will be called u .on to elect nine members to the County Council. From what we can learn the e will be >ut four of the o'd Councillors seek re-election, Messrs Ginnon (Tologa) Stubbs (Waiapu), King (Gisborne), and Charles Gray (Wai ra a Riding). Messrs Chambers, G. L. Sunderland, J. W. Sunderland, Dobbie, and Wallace have, we understand, decided not to again come forward. As regard the first four it is not altogether to be regretted that they have determined to stand out, but as regards the lasi tamed we hope he will re-consider his decision.

While acknowledging that Messrs G. L. Sunderland, and Chambers, have been good members we have detected a certain vein of selfishness running through their actions, which was more particularly noticeable in the discussion >n the proposed reduction of workmen’s wages. As far as Uessrs Doboic tnd J. W. Sunderland were concerned they were altogether too weak as Councillors, and trusted implicitly tn anything that might be done by Messrs Chambers or G. L. Sunderland.

Mr King is again expected to come orwaid, but he has weakened any chance of ever again being elected to a seat m 1 local body, by being the mover in the wages quest on. That Mr King above anybody should have deemed if necessary to attempt to take the bread out of a workman's mouth was a matter of great surprise He, being a working man himself, should know full well th.it eight sh Hings a day is not one penny too much for a day’s work in the country. Anyhow by his Heeds shall he be judged, and the ratepayers should show him that his act on have not been fair or just

Messrs Gannon and Stubbs will contest th" Coast seats. They have proved good members, still they may find worthy opponents in Messrs Joyce and Hale. For the Waikohu Riding Messrs Orr and Wethered will probably be unopposed, as wi.l be Messrs f. Clarke and J. Price for Te Arai. Messrs Co'em tn and Grey will contest Waimata, whi'e Messrs A B. Newman, G. Davis and W. King will stand for the Gisborne Riding Owing to the creation of the naw district of Wnataupoko and the consequent a'teration of the representation of the Gisborne Riding the members elected for the Waimata and Gisborne Ridings will only hold offiuo until the special order making these amendments is gazetted. A second election will therefore take place early in December for tlicse ri< 1 in gt*.
