Assaulting an Editor.

ATTEMPT TO CRUSH THE WAIRARAPA OBSERVER. Ths evidenee elicited in ths assault na«“ of Mr C. G. B-cketr, newspaper proprietor, versus G. W. Deller, botober, went to show one of the most cowardly and brutal assaults that has come under the public notice for some time. Mr Beard, solicitor for the defence, submitted that the defendant's conduct was justified to a certain extent, inas. much as it was the only means open to him set at the proprietor of ’he pap’r. The R.M. Mr Von Sturmer, remarked that it was a dangerous position to be in, if the theory advanced by the learned course! for the defence whs to be acted upon, it might then be necessary tor th-: Ob erver to keep an editor on the premises that could use his fists in an emergency as well as his pen. There is a most objectionable ring known as “ the clique ” who are most difficult to control and who have for a considerable time past put the paper j net mentioned to a great deag of trouble and inconvenience. The bulk of these worthies hold opposite views politically to the Observer, and it is an open secret that they intend if they can to put the paper out of existence. Of course it is a case of hate and fury ill supplied, as by the line of action they have been pleased to adopt, they are increasing the number of the Observer's friends daily.
