The Telephone business must be a very profitable one to the colony. The number ot subscribers has increased from 1755 in It 86 to 2042 to March 1887. The gross re en ;e for the year was £15,477, the working expenses were £9,806 and the net revenue ot profit was no less than £5,671 or £l2 ISs 7d per cent for the year on the capital expended, a most satisfactory resalt. The following is a brief resume of business done at Gisborne in Post Office otdera dur, ing the year ending MarchMiney orders, issued 1837, amount £6349 <>s 34 ; ditto paid 711, amount £3141 Ils 23. The new accounts opened at the Savings Bank were 311. 1598 deposits were made, he amount being £11,957, 16s 61. 205 accounts wen closed and 994 withdrawals mad".
