The Defeated Premier.

The following letter is from the Wellington Press. It is needless to say that it has not been reprinted from any other paper :— Dbab Stout,—

So sorry to hear the result of the election for Dunedin. I am an old man and the country can better spare me than you, who have many years before you to redeem the character you have lost in its services, and you will want every year you can get. You will, I am sure, excuse my outspoken opinion when I assure you, with tears in my eyes, that it comes from my heart. Under these circumstances, I have consulted with some of my chief supporters, to whom a contested election is quite a little fortune, and they unanimously agree with me that I should resign this seat in order that you may come and contest it with me. What I mean to say is that I am so bound by many natural ties of affection to the people here that I should be failing in my duty if I did not give them an opportunity of saying whether they prefer you or me as their representative. At the same time, I feel that unborn millions might account me selfish it I did not add my offer of a constituency to those already received by t he most advanced Radical in the colony, and I therefore beg of you to come and see wear you can do, but to be candid with you, I really hardly think that you will manage to get in. Tours sincerely, George Gbky.
