A Warning Note.

STOPPAGE OF HARBOUR WORKS.

A telegram from Warrnambool (Victoria) says :—Considerable sensation has been caused by the stoppage of the breakwater works, AU the men were paid off on Saturday night by Messrs MoKentie and Dobson. The redsori for this course is stated by the contractors to be in consequence of their not obtaining sufficient advances from the Government. Concrete blocks to the value of £lO,OOO are now in the yard ready for placing in position, but they cannot be deposited, owing to the Titan crane not having arrived. The contractors aver also that the contour and formation ot the bottom of the bay in line of the breakwater are entirely different from the specifications, being composed of rock, much waterworn, instead of sand. The Public Works department, they complain, will give them no satisfaction iu the matter, aud they are therefore unable to nroceed with the preparation of the foundation of the work. The contractors refuse to proceed with further block-making without heavier advances, and as they cannot go on with the preparation of the base in the absence of instructions from the department, the works are totally suspended.
