The trial of Bridget Mephan, charged with the wilful murder of her sister, Ann Callow, at Wangaratta, on July 6 last, was conduced on Saturday September 3, at the Beechworth Assizes, Victoria. The evidence conclusively proved that prisoner had made repeated threats that she would be revenged for an alleged breach of agreement respecting property on the part of the deceased, and the witnesses further connected her with the time and place of the murder. A handl eg found in the possession of the prisoner when she vas arrested was covered with b'oodstains, which, on analysis, proved to be human blood. A bottle found on the premises where the deed was committed was also coveted with blood and hair, the latter corresponding with the hair on the head of deceased. After a short deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy, Sentence of death was then pa’sed.
