The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE. Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Saturday, September 10, 1887.

Bo just and tear not; Lot fill the ends thou aim’st nt bo thy Country’s, Thy God’s, and truth's.

KANUI TE PAI TIMI KARA. “ Kanui te pai Timi Kara,” which being translated, signifieth briefly, “ Bravo Jimmy.” It is still premature to offer Mr Carroll our congratulations, but his success is now so well within the bounds of possibility that we cannot help giving vent to an advance cry of delight. There is yet one return to come in, but this, so far as we can learn upon good authority, is likely to result in Mr Carroll’s favour. The fight has been a long and arduous one, the issues are great, and extremely important to both races, but believing as we do most sincerely that the defeat of Wi Pere by Carroll will ultimately result in that long desired consumation, to wit, a reversal of Ballance’s disastrous land policy, we sincerely hope and pray that Carroll's lead may be maintained, and that the final result of the poll may shew his name at the top. By his return both natives and pakehas will reap advantage, and when wishing him every success, we feel sure we are echoing the thought o all who have the welfare of both races at heart. We say “Bravo Jimmy” before the last return is in, but in our next issue we hope to congratulate Mr James Carroll upon being returned member for the Eastern Maori Electoral District in the House of Representatives.
