The British Army.
Tax Berlin “ Kreuz Zeitung" contained an article on June 10th on the British army and naval forces, severely blaming their insufficiency. The army the writer says, has got two army corps, together not as strong as two German divisions. There is a lack of Cavalry and horses, and nothing is prepared for mobilisation. The department for waggons and provisioning are particularly bad. Regiments have only 800 horses for 366 men. The depots for Indian regiments have but 20 horses for 85 men. English military literature, it is alleged, affords numerous instances of insufficiency. The " Kreuz Zeitung" represents Gibraltar's state as defenceless, its guns being old-fashioned (except two modern guns of doubtful value) and powerless against a foreign squadron, whose ships Gibraltar's guus could act reach. There are no decks for repairing, no room for coal, no protection for the English fleet, and only two torpedo boats. In conclusion the “ Kreuz Zeitung ” says it would be a mistake for England to let herself be blinded by exaggerated trust in the volunteers. The English army is too small. It lacks horses, and has made no preparation for war. In this state nobody can rely on England's military power. If she lacks the energy to make her army sufficiently strong, and to bring the army up to modern requirements, the European powers will get accustomed to cast British interests aside.
