The savings in the Native Department which the Minister will be able to lay before the House of Representatives are very considerable, The expenditure as shown in the Treasury returns for the Native Department for the quarter ended Jana last was £5909> aS against £7022 for the corresponding quarter of last year. But a comparison of the expenditure for 1886-87 with that of 1874-75, under the head of “ Appropriations by Parliament,” for salaries and contingencies will give an idea Of the great reductions Which have bee effected of late gears'. The official figures for 1886-87 are £3lll, and for 1874-75 £30;149. Tha Lind court expenditure, which is not included in the last comparison, has greatly increased since 1874, but the work has very largely increased. The expenditure in 1874 was £6695, and in 188887 £19,977. The vote to be taken for this is £12,000, showing a reduction of £7OOO- - aggregate of salaries and pensions to natives chargeable in the Civil list for native purposes gwill be reduced from £4963 to £3856. The Minister hopes to accomplish a large saving by giving relief to natives requiring it through local Boards.
