Mr Gannon and the Herald.
A BEJECTED LETTER, [To THE EniTOß.j Sib, —The.following letter, or one to the same effect, I sent to the Herald for publication, but beyond putting in a sentence here and there, and making some uncalled for and scurrilous remarks of their own, they have not inserted it. It is obvious from this that the Herald's columns are closed to anything that may be said against Mr Graham The letter, to the best of my recollection, was as follows: —“ In a local in your paper you make the assertion that Mr Gannon had written an article to the Napier Daily Telegraph in praise of his own candidature. On what grounds do you make such an assertion ? You can have no possible reason for doing so beyond the fact that you wish to disparage Mr Gannon in the eyes of the electors. One might as well assume that you wrote Mr Graham’s address which he read out to the electors the other evening. Mr Gannon is not the man to blow his own trumpet. There are plenty of others, who acknowledging his many qualifications to represent this district, will do that for him. Would Mr Graham have ventured to seek the honour'd representing this district had he not been promised the personal influence of Mr Locke ? I venture to say he would not On that gentleman’s influence alone does he rest his appeal to the electors, not upon his own fitness for the seat. You would be serving the interests of your candidate much better if you gave fair play to all, instead of making unwarranted charges as to the conduct of one candidate as against that of another. Assertions of which you can have no possible proof.”—l am, etc., W. Gabpikeb.
