POLITICAL POINTS.

The N.Z. Times has nominated Messrs Fisher, Scobie Mackenzie, Menteath, and Dr Newman for a new Ministry. There are now 1,660 electors on the Tauranga roll. Says a contemporary :—lt is on the cards that Sir George Grey will take a prominent position in the next Parliament. Should the present Ministry be defeated, Major Atkinson would probably be unable to form a Ministry as the southern members will be pledged against him, and as Sir G. Grey will bring several followers with him from Auckland, he may again find himself in the position of a leader in the House.

Speaking at Lyttelton last week the Premier remarked :—“ I should like to know what are the proposals of the Opposition, who talk so loudly of economy. One member says he will reduce by £lOO,OOO, another says £200,000, and another putsthe amount at £300,000, and I see that one member actually says that he can reduce the Estimates by £400,000, if they would only give him the power to run the Government of the colony.— (Applause and laughter.) It seems to me as if you were putting up the management of the affairs of this colony to Dutch auction, and that the man who can open his mouth the widest about reduction is the man for the people.—(Laughter.) -
