CANTERBURY V. WELLINGTON.

WELLINGTON WINS BY A POINT. Wellington, last night. The football match Canterbury v. Welling, ton came off yesterday, and resulted in a win for the Northerners by four points to three. The play throughout was very fast and there were several somewhat serious accidents. The result was rather a surprise, as odds were laid freely in favour of the Canterbury men.

LOCAL MATCHES.

A match takes place at Matawhero this afternoon between a team from the Gisborne School and a team representing the schools of the country districts. The Gisborne School players have the disadvantage to contend with that there is no convenient ground upon which they can practice, Captain Tucker’s paddock being the nearest place available, but last season the school could produce a smart team, and, excepting tor want of practice, there is no reason why it should not do so now, The country team will also haie the drawback of not being able to work to, gether, but there are a few tough ones at the Murewai who will require a lot of beating. The weather is at present very unfavorable. The town team will be composed of the following Full back: A. deCosta ; half-backs; E. O'Meara, A. Witty, W. Booth; quaterbacks; H. Lysnar, G. Morgan ; forwards: E. Maude, R. Bobinsen, H. McPhail, B, Scott, F, Henderson, W. Wilson, H. Lysnari J. Poynter, A..Bobinsun. Emergencies: T, Witty, J. Lewell, and W. Reeves.

A match between the Gisborne team and a team composed of the gentlemen portion ot the Hall Company and the member- of the Union Club has been arranged for to-day. The following (subject to alterations) will represent the Gisborne Club: —Full back, Sage; halves. Booth, Staite, L. Bees ; quar. tera, Tyler, Morgan ; forwards, Dunlop, Biki, Bourke, Allen, Lysuar, Tucker, Izod, A. Bees and Bull; emergencies, Evans and Veale. If the members of the Company can play football as well as they can dunce we should say the Union Club would have the best of the game. The other team—” Hall's combined ” — will be represented;by,the following .players: —Full back ; Abraham; halves: Rua, Skeet, Munroe ; quarters : W. Perman, Lynch; for, wards: J. Porman, H. Hall, J. Hall, Waud, Gribbon, Arundel, Whitehead, Weston, Mitchell, and Harman. Emergencies : Wade and Lemuel.
