ANOTHER HERO LOST

STANLEY REPORTED DEAD. A DESPERATE FIGHT. London, July 21. Great excitement, almost equal to that when General Gordon’s death was reported, has occurred here over the reported death of the African explorer, H. M. Stanley, who went to rescue Emin Bey in the Southwestern Soudan. A telegram has been received from the West Coast of Africa, stating that intelligence has reached the settlement at Stanley Pool, on the Congo, from the missionary station formed by the Belgian Roman Catholic mission at Matabeiya on the Upper Congo, that H, M. Stanley had been killed in a desperate encounter with a tribe inhabiting the basin of the Biver Chattembao in the Lower Wadelai. The expedition had already passed through some of Ngami’s country without molestation, and hopes of reaching Dr. Emin Junker (Emin Pasha) were high, when an unexpected combat was forced on the expedition by a savage tribe whose chiefs were interested in the slave trade of the Upper Congo. The report is very vague, but states that a desperate struggle took place. The attacking force was eventually driven off with a severe loss. Stanley, however, was shot dead early in the struggle. Further details of the affair are anxiously looked for here. The King of the Belgians, who as President of the Belgian Geographical Society had contributed liberally to the expedition, has telegraphed for full details as to the occurrence. It is thought here that the story may be untrue, but there is great anxiety as to Stanley’s fate. LATER. London, July 22. The news about Stanley’s death is said to be quite true]
