GENERAL NOTES.
The fact that the Melbourne and New Zealand Cups are run over the same distance, and at the same time of the year, affords a capital opportunity to effect a comparison between the respective handicappers’ estimate of the New Zealand horses engaged in both races. The following are the handicaps : —Melbourne.—Nelson 9.9, Disowned 8.8, Spade Guinea 8.6, Pasha 7.12, Thunderbolt 7.8, Silver Prince 7.3, Niagara 7.3, Sextant 7.3, Enfilade {6.12, Too Soon 6.10, and Bangle 6.5. New Zealand.—Nelson 9.10, Disowned 8.7, Spade Guinea 9.0 Pasha 8.9, Thunderbolt 8.5, Silver Prince 8.8, Niagara 7.6, Sextant 7.6, Enfilade 6.10, Too Soon 6.10, Bangle 6.12. A filly by Robinson Crusoe—Sunshine, full sister to Sextant, was sold at Sydney lately to Mr Dykes for 85 guineas. There are some prospects of Island Bay again becoming a racing arena. D. O’Brien has refused an offer of 1200 guineas for Sextant. Major George is unlikely to take Nelson to Melbourne during the forthcoming season. Belle is, bar accident, sure to contest the Grand National Steeplechase, to be run at Christchurch on the 28th inst. The ex-New Zealander St Dunstan won the Sydney Hunt Club Steeplechase by ten lengths, with 12st in the saddle. The Sydney bookmakers are offering 100 J to 1 against “ mixed goods ” for th j Hawkesbury and Metropolitan Hand leaps. » Woodpecker and Pipi have been sold for 12 and 25 guineas respectively, Catesby for £lOO, and Tip for £l2. The final course for the Victorian Cup was won on Friday last by Livingstone. The N.Z. Waterloo Cup was won last we< k by Haroun al Raschid, Killarney being the runner up. Cannon won the Purse and Bocket the Plate. In Australia it is expected that thousands of pounds will change hands over the race between Hrnlan and Beach.
