Protection in Canada.
A Dunedin correspondent of the Wellington Press sends the following extract from a letter from a Canadian farmer :—“ Protection won’t do. It is the very worst thing in the world for the poor man and the farmer. We have to pay from 10 to 40 per cent, more for clothing, medi'ine, groceries, coal, &c. A few are doing well by it, however mainly manufacturers, sugar refiners, Custom-house officers, and other Government officials. There are thousands of the latter drawing big salaries. It takes more to collect the extra taxes than what they yield, and Protection will swamp us soon if. there is not a stop put to it. We have had eight years of it without intermission, and just here at my door we have an asylum with about a thousand inmates, and some poorhouses the number of whose inmates I am unable to give, besides which we have the soup kitchen distributing hundreds of quarts of soup, and giving away hundreds of loaves every day. Our taxes are increasing every year. May the Lord protect you from Protection.
