Herr Krupp, of Essen, is a present manufacturing a gun weighing close upon 139 tons. Its length is to be 52} ft. and its calibre 15 ft. 7 in. The projectiles to be used with this arm are of two kinds, one a steel shell 3 ft. 9 in. long and weighing 1,630 lb., the other 5 ft. 2 in. long and weighing 2,314 lb. The service charge consists of 1,069 lb. of brown prismatic powder. With this charge the lighter shell will have an initial velocity of 2,411 ft., the heavier shell one ot 2,099 ft. per second. The lighter shell will penetrate a wrought iron plate 45 inches thick or two plares of the respective thicknesses of 22 in. and 33 in. placed at a short distance from the muzzle of the gun. In the case of the heavier projectile the figures are 47} in., 23J in., and 34f in. respectively.
