An Auckland Tradesman writes to the Star : —“ In the present depressed state of commercial matters tradespeople cannot afford ta treat the public to a celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee, for that is really what it amounts to. I suggest that instead of spending unnecessary money in the observance of unnecessary holidays, the people first pay their legitimate debts, many of which were contracted at holiday times long gone by. Heaven knows tradespeople are having a sorry time, and each holiday adds another straw upon the well-nigh broken camel’s back. Let no more than one day be observed as a holiday, or, better still, 110’day at all. The public would honor Her Ma jesty far more by honourably paying their just debts than by dishonouring themselves by placing yet more credit on the tradesman’s I already over-weighted ledger, and just for the sake of a day or two’s frivolous and unI satisfying pleasure.
