Australia’s Deep Regret Voiced in Message by Governor-General

Prime Minister’s Tribute to the King (Rec. 5.25) CANBERRA, Nov. 23 “This news; comes as a great shock to an of us, and I know tnat Australia will endorse the message which I asKea tiovernor-General McKell to send to London,” said the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. J. B. Chifley. “That message has expressed our deep regret in His Majesty’s state of health, and it has urged His Majesty to adopt, in its entirety, the advice of his doctors. I said that, although we m Australia are bitterly disappointed that we will not have the privilege of having Their Majesties and Princess Margaret with us in this country, as planned, that was of a very secondary consideration when compared with the King’s well-being. The paramount wish in the mind of every Australian will be for His Majesty s complete and speedy restoration to good health. The affection and the esteem in which all of the members of tne Royal Family are held by the People of- Australia will be heightened by the knoweldge that His Majesty s state of health has been brought about by his devotion to his duty as the Sovereign and that deep personal concern which he has shown for his people in the difficult times through which, in recent years, the British Commonwealth has passed.”
