U.S. BALLOON ASCENDS 26½ MILES

WASHINGTON, Nov. 22. The United States Army Signal Corps claims to have sent a balloon fitted with instruments to a height of 140,000 feet—five miles above the previous record of 21t miles. The balloon took two hours and a half to reach its maximum height It floated out of sight at 40,000 feet, after which radio instruments traced its climb to 140.000 feet, where it burst. The recording instruments floated to earth by parachute and the results will be used to help weather forecasting and rocket development. The balloon was made of latex and was filled with neoprene. It was only half inflated when released, but at 35,000 feet it expanded to its full diameter of 75 feet. The Army’s record falls far short of at least one' other man-made device—the German V2 bomb-r-which reached heights between 70 Jmd 80 miles.
