(Rec. 9.25) LONDON, Nov. 16. The Israeli Foreign Minister; M. Shertok, made it ciear to the Untied Nations Political Committee yesterday that Israel intended to hold on to her conquests, says the correspondent of the Daily Telegraph at Paris. He said that Israel still accepted the partition plan that was passed by the U.N.O. General Assembly last November. But he added: “Arab aggression had rendered imperative a numbei' of territorial improvements.” These, he said, had already been carried into effect. i Speaking of the Negev, from which the Israeli forces are being required by the U.N.O. Security Council to withdraw by Friday next to provisional truce lines, he said: “The Negev is Israel’s future, and no part of it can be given or bartered away.” M. Shertok also said that Israel could not accept any international regime for Jerusalem. Nor, he said, would Israel accept any derogation of her authority in the Haifa port and Haifa oil refineries, and at the Lydda airport.

Palestine Issue Again Debated At U.N. Assembly

PARIS, November 15. The United Nations Political Committee embarked on a full-dress debate on the future of Palestine, while the Security Council, meeting at the same time, tried to transform the precarious truce into a more solid armistice. The Political Committee is basing, its debate on Count Bernadotte’s last report before his assassination. Britain has already announced that she supports Count Bernadotte’s plan, but the United States attitude is still not certain. The Security Council began its discussion on the plan. of the acting mediator, Dr Bunche, to establish ar. armistice over the whole of Palestine, and Sir Alexander Cadogan (Britain) immediately stated that he had no objection to his resolution, calling for a truce extension from the Negev to the northern fronts, being considered at the same time. MOVE BY CANADA General McNaughton (Canada) offered the Security Council a new resolution, which stated that the Pales tine situation is a threat to peace ano called for an immediate armistice as a necessary bridge between the broken truce and the final peace settlement. General McNaughton also askect for the withdrawal and reduction ot the Jewish and Arab forces and the establishment of permanent demarcation lines. .■ Mr Faris el Khouri (Syria) said ar. armistice could not be imposed or ordered. It should be accepted. “You are going to prejudice the political settlement by transforming the truce into an armistice”, he declared. He called for an investigation of the reports of illegal arms shipments to the Jews from certain East European countries. In the Political Committee, Mr Moshe Shertok (Israeli Foreign Minister), stated that Israel would never give up the Negev. He warned that there would be bloody battles if anybody tried to take the Negev from Israel. Mr Shertok called for prompt action to force the Arab invading armies out of all Palestine.
