CRICKET FIRST TEST IN INDIA DRAWN

(Rec. 9.10). NEW DELHI, Nov. 14. The Indian batsmen stonewalled against the West Indians until the drawing of stumps, when their score was 220 for six wickets, in reply to West Indies’ 631. The Indians thus forced a draw in the first test match ever played between India and the West Indies. All day the Indian batsmen concentrated on keeping their wickets intact. Only 74 runs were scored between lunch and tea, and only 51 between tea and the drawing of stumps. A stubborn stand by Adhikari and Sarwate gave India a draw after the West Indies had appeared to have a winning chance. Women’s Cricket Association Opening The opening of the Women's Cricket Association season was held on Saturday in the United Pavilion, in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. F. F. Boustridge) Association officials and friends. The six ladies’ teams were together for the first time, and all matches were played on the Recreation Ground. The President, Mrs. L. Beck, introduced the Fatroness, Mrs. F. F. Boustridge, who presented trophies won last season. Mrs. Boustridge recalled that the last time she was present at a cricket function was to welcome the Australian team. She wished the Association every success and hoped the sport would continue to thrive. The Seddon Cup was presented to Miss J. Fraser, captain, Hokitika Club, winners of the 1947-48 competition. A trophy donated for the best bowling average .(3 for 53), against the Australians, was won by Mrs. M. Vaughan. Mrs. I. Baird, Hokitika, carried off the bat. for the highest score. Mr. L. Lindley, who donated a bat for the best individual performance, presented it to Miss M. Instone. Mrs. Boustridge then declared the 1948-49 season open. The women cricketers have gained many stalwart supporters over the last two seasons, and by close co-op-eration with the men's association, this promises to be a grand season for cricket enthusiasts on the West Coast. .
