Fire on Coal Ship Extinguished

MELBOURNE, Nov. The fire in the British freighter Port Vercheres has been extinguish* ed and it is now expected that the loss in the coal cargo will be only slight. Foremen, . wearing respirators, penetrated to the seat of the fire as watersiders worked hurriedly to unload 'the smouldering coal from tne vessel. The workers were menaced by fumes which were rising to dense clouds as the firemen reached the seat of the fire about 20 feet below the deck level. The ship brought the first shipment of coal ordered by the Hollway Government from the United Kingdom for the Victorian railways, pui. it is believed that much of her cargo will be useless. The coal cargo of 8500 tons caught fire last Wednesday when the vessel was between Perth and Melbourne. The outbreak was kept under control by sealing the hatches and removing the ventilators.
