(Our Own Correspondent). Personal : Mr. and Mrs. Chapman of Nelson have arrived on a visit to their daughter, Mrs. J. White. Miss M. Coates spent the weekend in Christchurch. Mr. M. Eder returns this week from Wellington where he has been undergoing a course of instruction at the head office of Woolworths Ltd. Taylorville School Committee: Plans for the new school building were received from the Board at the monthly meeting of the Committee, presided over by Mr. R. Butterfield. Every effort will now be concentrated on having the erection commenced at as early a date as possible. The plans provide for a threeroomed building complete with cloak rooms, storeroom for each classroom, teachers’ room, and. a new convenience block with septic tank. The building will be erected along the southern boundary, thus leaving a large playing area in front. It was decided to prepare a suggested plan for the lay-out of the immediate environs of the buiding for the Board’s approval, and financial assistance in having this put into effect. The plan provides for the sealing of the present school site and environs to provide an all-weather playing area. Advice was received from the Board that as a consequence of the roll number falling below 80, the B. assistant’s position should disappear, but application had been made to th P Department for the present assistant to be retained. The committee instructed the secretary to inform the- Board that it was anticipated that the roll number at the opening of 1949 would be S 3, which would entitle the school to a permanent extra assistant. Arrangements were made for the annual Christmas Tree to be held on the same lines as last year, owing to a recommendation from the Board, that no concert be held in the third term. If it were found necessary to raise funds, the Committee would request the teachers to arrange a concert in either the first or second terms of next year. The delegate furnished a report on the last meeting- of thp West Coast School Committees’ Association. It was decided to extend the local commit foe’s sincerest thanks to the As--oc’alinn fm- their assistance in expediting the erection of the new school building. . The Head Teacher reported thar there had been considerable absence from school without justifiable reason, and that it had been found necessary 1o report several families to th e Board, which would take steps to have the family allowance stopped should there be a recurrence of the trouble. The first shoot for C. Buckman s Trophy was fired on Sunday last, conditions being seven shots at eacn of the 390. 500 and 600 yard ranges. Low scores were the order ol the day. The second’ and final shoot lor this trophy will be fired next Sunday, with ten shots at 300, and eleven shots at 500 yards.

Working Men’s Club: Plans for the alterations (o the property at Wallsend recently purchased. were discussed and finalised at a meeting held on Sunday last. The proposed plan incorporates a large social room and a lounge for lady visitors, together with the extension of the front of the building and installation of every convenience. The work will be proceeded with immediately, and the new rooms should bn ready for occupancy in time for Christmas. C ric k et * On Sunday last the first competition match was played, when the local team journeyed to Nelson Creek and won the match by 36 runs on the first Innings, after compiling- the creditable score of 161, in which most of the batsmen reached double figures. Top scorer was. B. W’lh’ams with 27. A. Watson batted nicelv for 22 showing much promise.
