Mrs Elizabeth Braddock, a Labour member of the House of Commons, has lost a libel action against the proprietors of the Bolton Evening News, which alleged that Mrs Braddock had “danced a jig” in the House of Commons. The newspaper was describing events following the passage of the Transport Nationalisation Bill, when the Conservatives, as a protest against the use of the guillotine to limit debate, walked out of the House of Commons, whereupon several Labour members of the House, including Mrs Braddock, occupied the Conservatives’ schLs Mrs Braddock told the Court: “I \valked across quite naturally”. A Conservative M.P., Mr BuchanHepburn, declared that Mrs Braddock “sidled with a touch of mincing”. He added: “I have been in the House for 17 years, and I have never seen a less dignified spectacle”. The jury awarded costs to the defendants.
