P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 12. At Addington to-day a successful attempt was made by Highland Fling, before the first race, to lower the mile record of 1.59 2-5. To the accompaniment of a cheering crowd, he succeeded in lowering the time to 1.57 4-5. Highland Fling received a further ovation when he won the final event, after meeting with interference at the start. . Driven by his trainer, L. F. Berkett he knocked one and three-fifths seconds off the record of Lawn Derby, which he also had lately equalled. The first quarter-mile took 29sec, the next 29 2-ssec, the third quarter 30 cec and the last quarter 29 l-ssec, making 58 2-ssec for the first halfmile and 59 2-ssec for the second half-mile, or just one second difference. Berkett used neither whip nor pacer Highland Flings iecord is -- 4-ssec outside the world mile record of Billy Direct (U.S.A.) set ten years ago. Highland Fling has won £31,170, a New Zealand record. His records al World two miles race record, 4,10 3- : Australasian mile record, 1.57 4- N.Z. mile and a-half record, 3.9 4-5 (shared by Clockwork), and N.Z. 2-year-old mile record, 2.10.
