British Recruiting to be Voluntary in Peace Time
LONDON, November 9. Reuter’s political correspondent says: “There will be no conscription for civil defence in peace time. This is made clear in the Government’s Civil Defence Bill, which has just been published. However,, people are encouraged to volunteer. “The threat of the atomic bomb is fully recognised in the revised arrangements which cover protection against projected missiles of greater range and destructive capacity than those which Britain experienced during the last war. “The nucleus of Britain’s new plans will be a series of training colleges—four to begin with—to train instructors. The construction of deep shelters is not envisaged for the time being, although the demolition of some war time shelters has been stopped. “The revised civil defence plans are related to Britain’s present economic position, which rules out everything but, the most necessary”.
