Worst Whitebait Season in History of Coast
The worst in the history of the West Coast, was how the Inspector of Fisheries (Mr W. R. Cochrane) described . the present whitebait season yesterday. The increased number of people who undertook the occupation this year will scarcely clear expenses, and . the poor returns generally will be a set-back to the industry. More than 1000 tons of whitebait were transported from the province last year, but the figures this year are substantially below that. The canning factories have also suffered, and little work has been possible. Continuous rough seas, stormy weather and flooded rivers, have been contributing factors. Mr Cochrane, who was appointed because of the development of the industry, arrived in Greymouth only last week.
