HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, Oct. 13. Following a spell of good weather, heavy rain commenced to fall in Westland during the early hours of this morning and continued throughout the day. The rain increased after noon, and some very heavy showers were experienced. The wind was from the north-west and the rivers may flood. Whitebait fishermen secured some fair catches prior to the change in the weather conditions, but. the season is very disappointing. With the present conditions there will be a further scarcity of fish for some days. Between noon and 2 p.m. the intersection of Weld and Tancred Streets was almost under water, the water tables being unable to cope with the large volume. Rain was still falling heavily later and if it continues flooding will be heavy. County residents report heavy rain in the back areas, and they may bring down the snow from the mountains. Fortunately the channel over the Hokitika bar is wide open, and this will be of great assistance in permitting the flood waters to escape rapidly to sea.
