Homes for Immigrants Sought in City
CHRISTCHURCH, October 10. To ensure accommodation to new settlers arriving in Christchurch from the United Kingdom, the National Council of Women is compiling a register of householders who ” are willing to accept new arrivals as hoarders in their homes. The secretary of the council’s immigration subcommittee (Mrs M. W> Bristow), of which Mrs E. A. Coombs is convenor, said the National Council of Women agreed to accent for a year the responsibility of finding accommodation for new settlers. The work of organisation had been going on since July, and the response from the public had been good, but too slow to meet the needs. “We realise that people may be reluctant to take strangers into thenhomes, but we do emphasise that this is a work of national importance and a way in which they can help their country,” she added.
