Six Months’ Gaol Given Communist in Queensland

(Rec. 10.30) BRISBANE, Oct. 12 Gilbert Burns, a member of the Executive of the Queensland Communist Party pleaded not guilty today to a- charge of sedition preferred against him under the Crimes Act. ' The charge was proceeded with as one for hearing under summary jurisdiction. It is claimed that ,at a public.meeting on September 15, Burns said: “If Australia was involved in a Third World War, that war would be between Soviet Russia and American and British Imperialism. It would be a counter-revolutionary war. “We Communists, would oppose that war, and would fight on the side of the Soviet Union.” Counsel for the accused has indicated that he will not call evidence. . Burns was sentenced to six months imprisonment. Notice of appeal was given.
