Australia’s Quest for Five Thousand More Air Force Recruits

MELBOURNE, October 9. No potential enemy could make a "Pearl Harbour” attack on Australia at present, said the chief of the air staff, Air Marshal Jones, but if an emergency developed three lighter squadrons .could be speedily recalled from Japan. He said that four citizen Air Force squadrons were being built up in Australia on a limited scale, but they could be used at short, notice. The R.A.A.F. was still 5000 short of its 13,000 target strength. Air Marshal Jones said the R.A.A.F. had many thousands enrolled on the reserve, but needed more ground staff for the reserve. If Australia had to fight again, it was hoped it would be outside its- own borders.-
