New York Paper Backing Dewey

The influential independent New York Times, which supported President Roosevelt against Mr Thomas Dewey in 1944, last night announced its support for Mr Dewey against President Truman. The Times says its decision was prompted by the changes in the Republican attitude on foreign policy, by Dewey’s administrative abilities, and broadening international views, by the disintegration of the Democratic Party by the Democratic indecision and by the “frequent examples of slip-shod administration which are traditional results of one party’s staying too long in power.”

The statement refers to the “emergence of enlightened, courageous Republican leadership on foreign policy in the Senate,” and says the leadership of Senator Vandenberg is a guarantee that there will be no backsliding into isolationism. This guarantee is backed up by the presence in the Senate of a new generation of Republicans, who see international issues clearly. The Times says of Mr Dewey: "As President, we believe, he could be expected to carry out a bi-partisan American policy with firmness, efficiency and without the confusion of those sudden turns and quick reversals which! have characterised the course of the present administration on such an issue-as, say, Palestine.”
