SOCCER ENGLISH SEASON

LONDON, Oct. 9 The English soccer season is now well on its way and the leaders in the first division are Portsmouth, Derby County and Birmingham. Birmingham’s prominent position is interesting, since they were promoted from the second division at the end of last season. Newcastle, who have also been promoted, are now sixth in the first division. Last year’s champions, Arsenal, are seventh in this division and Manchester United, who were second are now ninth. The second division leaders are West Bromwich Albion, Tottenham, and Bury. Queens Park Rangers and Lincoln, promoted from the third division are not faring so well, the Rangers being fifteenth and Lincoln last but one. Swansea top the third division at present with Bournemouth and Bristol Rovers second and third.
