Mr Eden Alleges Government Slackness on National Service

LONDON, Oct. 9. Mr Anthony Eden, addressing the Conservative 'Party conference said: “Most of us have felt deeply uneasy since the Government’s surrender to its own extremists on the issue of national service more than a year ago. Personally, I prefer the foreign policy of Mr Ernest Bevin to that of Mr Emanuel Shinwell.. “It is not enough to say that we hate Communism. If we are to defeat it, we must believe fervently in our faith and in ourselves.

“It is in this spirit that we must send a message of confidence to Europe and, indeed, to all the world, so that the lan r liberty may be lit again and man may live in freedom and peace.” “No successful foreign policy can be pursued by Britain which is not based on the full approval and cooperation of our great partners in the Commonwealth and Empire oversea. Our position as a party is that we will work for the closest collobor.ation with our overseas partners in the nolitical, military and economic spheres in applying ourselves to our tasks.

“We threaten on one, but we say with equal clarity that we will toleiate no further encroachments.” Mr Eden received a prolonged ovaion and the conference unanimously endorsed his statement. Mr Mott Radcliffe, member for Windsor, said that the Conservative Party's support of Mr Bevin had been qualified by warning alto warning that events were moving very fast. The writing on the wall had been clear for all to see since 1946.
