Few good catches of whitebait were made in Greymouth at the week-end. Most of those who were fishing reported that eight pints was the best catch.
When a tractor capsized, the driver, Charles William Fleming, of Koiterangi, was pinned beneath it, and suffered a broken leg. He was admitted to the Westland Hospital.
Mr J. Brosnahan, of the Public Works Department staff at the Haast, South Westland, who recently sustained a double fracture of the ankle, is. at present a patient at the Westland Hospital.
The Minister of Mines, the Hon. A. McLagan, who was accompanied b> Mrs McLagan and - Mr J. B. Kent. M.P. arrived on Saturday afternoon from Christchurch. After visiting Blackball, the party left yesterday morning on return to Christchurch. An interest in soil erosion, developed through membership of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club and the New Zealand Alpine Club, lies behind the appointment of Mr M. J. Conway, of Christchurch, to the State Forest Service. On November 1 he will take up a position as assistantforester 4n the Nelson Conservancy, with headquarters at Reefton.
Sir Henry Tizard, chief scientific adviser to the British Government, will leave Britain for Australia on October 14 by the Orion, and is expected to arrive in New Zealand by air from Australia between December 12 and 18. Sir Henry Tizard will spend a fortnight to three weeks in New Zeafand ' discussing scientific defence questions with the New Zealand Government and New Zealand scientific authorities, says a London cable.
