PERSONAL ITEMS

Mr and Mrs Tom Learmont. snr., of Greymouth, returned on Thursday from Milwaukee where they visited their son, Tom. Thev also visited their daughter, Mrs John Droydoff, of Vancouver.

Messrs F. J. Rush and J. E. Mooney, of the Greymouth staff of the Land and Income Tax Department, leave on Monday for a period of duty at the head office in Wellington.

Messrs J. J. Granville, of the Rehabilitation Board, and G. I. Martin, of the Head Office of the Lands and Survey Department, Wellington, who have been paying a short visit to the West Coast, leave this morning on return to Wellington.

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, arrived by plane at Colombo on Thursday, and left immediately after lunch. He commented that Ceylon was fortunate in not being beset with disruption, which was hampering the progress of some other Eastern countries.

The death has occurred of Mr Eric S. Miller, a well-known Dunedin architect, aged 52. The design of many fine buildings in Dunedin, the latest being the new wing of the Medical School, was due to Mr Miller and his partner. Mr J. H. White. In the First World War, Mr Miller served with the engineers in France, afterwards going to England to study at the Architectural Association College in London. He served for eighteen months with the engineers of the National Reserve in World War 11.

The Minister of Mines and Labour, the Hon. A. McLagan, will arrive in Greymouth to-day. At the Blackball Miners’ Hall to-night he will unveil I a coloured enlarged portrait of a former Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb. Mr J. B. Kent, M.P. for Westland, is also expected to attend the ceremony which will be held during a social at which the Blackball Labour Party will be hosts to other branches in Westland. Mr A. G. Gerrand, operations manager of the National Airways Corporation since 1946, has been appointed acting assistant general manager (operations). Mr Gerrand was one of the original pilots of Union Airways when it was formed in 1935 and was service manager from 1938 to 1940. He served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force from 1940 to 1942 and with the Royal Air Force Transport Command from 1942 to 1945.
