Auckland Women Claim Men’s Rates of Fay

P.A. AUCKLAND, October 7. Men’s wage rates will be claimed for the 5,500 women working in Auckland as furriers, shirtmakers, clothing operatives, dressmakers, milliners, and shop tailoresses. Their present industrial agreements expire on December 12.

The application will be made by the Auckland Tailoresses’ Union, to which the women belong. All are sewers, machinists and pressers with an award wage of £4 6s weekly, though some have been earning up to £9. It is stated that some women have been teaching men their jobs. When the last agreements were framed, the same request was made, but it was not granted.
