BOOKIE HAD £12,000 TURNOVER

AUCKLAND, Oct. 7.

Stated by the police to have a yearly turnover of £12,000, George Matthews, 59 pleaded guilty before justices of the peace to a charge pt bookmaking. Defending counsel said Matthews was a veteran of World War I who suffered from tuberculosis and had to give up his fruiter’s business. He had refused to accept social securitv or other State aid. lhe Court imposed a fine of £lOO.
