Burmese Claim Success Against Rebel Forces

RANGOON, October 5.

1 A' Burmese Government communique announced the overthrow of the Karen rebels in Marenni State on the north-east frontier, near Siam.

The communique said that an “understanding” had been reached between the Government and the mutineers, with a resultant restoration of normal conditions. Burmese Government successes against Communist-led insurgents on several fronts are announced in another communique. It claimed that Government, forces re-occupied the insurgents’ headquarters at Kayan, 30 miles north-east of Rangoon, and had retaken Tantabin, 25 miles to the north-west of Rangoon. The restoration of Shwebandaw, near Prome, was also reported.
