Twelve men, who were found on licensed premises in Greymouth were each fined 10s and costs, by Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday.

The eighth adjournment in the charge of manslaughter against Reginald John McCraine, miner, was granted on the application of the police, by Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M., in Greymouth Police Court yesterday. McCraine was remanded until October 28.

Fourteen West Coast members of J Force who arrived in Auckland aboard the troopship, Duntroon on Tuesday are due to arrive in Lyttelton this morning from Wellington on the steamer express. They are expected in Greymouth on tiiis afternoon's express from Christchurch. .

Up to the end of August, ex-ser-vicemen have received tenancies of 8989 State rental houses and flats. During- August 164 State houses were allocated to ex-servicemen. The dress of some of the Old Vic players who arrived at Paraparaumu this week would strike conservative New Zealanders as being distinctly arty; but the wide range of sun glasses they sported was even more surprising. Although the sun was not strong, members of the company stepped off the aircraft wearing sun glasses which varied from the conventional type to a full eye shield model which is popular in the United States. One woman in the party donned the sun glass to out-sun glass all sun glasses in the cafeteria —two saucersized lenses mounted in a ghastly green frame.
At last evening’s meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board, the Harbourmaster, Captain H. Moar, presented the following report: During the first half of September the bar shoaled causing restrictions in vessels’ draught from the 23rd to the 30th. Deep westerly depressions caused boisterous weather and strong freshes in the river rendering the port unworkable during that period. Thirteen vessels totalling 7,576 tons arrived, while eleven vessels totalling 7,102 tons, de ■ parted. The mean average bar depth was 20ft 7in. while in the river there was a depth of 21ft Bim.
